Internships with PHXPD
The mission of the Phoenix Police Department Internship Program is to provide students with hands-on opportunities to learn about law enforcement and the criminal justice system from the perspective of a premier municipal police agency.
Throughout the program, interns assume a variety of roles—assisting with departmental functions and observing the daily work performed within specialized units. Interns gain invaluable, real-world experience, explore different areas of police work, and participate in departmental activities.
The ultimate goal of this internship is to prepare and inspire students to take the next step by applying to become Phoenix Police Officers upon completion of their experience.
Qualifications
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Minimum age for this position is 18 years old
- Submit to and successfully pass a thorough background investigation
- Some positions may require the use of personal or City vehicles. Individuals must be physically capable of safely operating motor vehicles, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record
Education
- First or second semester Junior or Senior at a four-year accredited college or university in a field applicable to criminal justice
- Applicant must be taking the internship for course credit
Internship Details
- Unpaid internship
- Minimum of 135 hours must be worked during the internship
Deadlines
- Spring internship (January-May ) -- Application deadline: First Friday in September - 16 weeks
- Summer internship (June-August) -- Application deadline: First Friday in January - 10 weeks
- Fall internship (September-December) -- Application deadline: First Friday in March - 16 weeks
Applying for an Internship with PHXPD
To apply for a PHXPD internship, all students must minimally provide:
- Complete Phoenix Police Department Internship Application
- Answer the essay questionnaire outlining the career goals of the applicant and their specific interest in working with the Phoenix Police Department
- Submit a resume that must include the applicant's full name and any specialized qualifications (for example, computer, audio/visual or communications)
- Submit an unofficial transcript
